The mezzanine is actually quite close to the ceiling. So the challenge became designing something that would still leave the whole space open and light. Rather than use a standard, straight handrail, which would read as a heavy horizontal line, I broke it up into curved sections and uprights, which left the whole piece feeling vertical and airy.
