Sculpture
This piece is forged steel with a rust and paint patina. John Hawkwood is an historical figure of the 14th century. He was born poor in England and died rich and married to Italian royalty, celebrated as a savior of Florence; he was likely one of the best-traveled, wealthiest, politically savvy men of his time. The mechanism of his rise to wealth and power was his skill as a soldier and mercenary captain. He fought in wars all over the continent for roughly 50 years. I was fascinated by his story, and his exploitation of the environment around him. He first became a commander of a famous company of archers.
Most of my sculptural work includes details that only become apparent upon close examination, hoping to reward repeated, deep, viewing.
