In May of 2005, blacksmiths from more than 20 countries- including Mali, Niger, Japan, US and most of Europe -gathered in Vechta, Germany for FERRO 2005. For 18 days we worked together to create art from tank steel. The pieces were cut apart with a torch, and forged and formed. The individual pieces were sold off, with proceeds going directly to UNICEF. After a week it was decided that we would assemble a larger sculpture, comprising elements made by each person. The centerpiece is the barrel of an A1 Panzer battle tank, cut, bent, and balanced on a point so that it rotates freely. This larger piece was also sold, proceeds again going to UNICEF.
